ACTIVITY #2 - Answers

1) Chief Saturiwa’s wife is wearing a dress made of SPANISH MOSS cloth. In the woods, this gray curly plant can have redbugs living in it.

2) Chief Saturiwa’s cape is called a MATCH COAT. This coat can be made from deer skin or feathers.

3) Chief Saturiwa’s wife is holding a whelk shell. She can use it as a BOWL or make it into a hoe to dig up the ground for planting crops

4) Their earrings are really EAR PINS. They can be made of bone, shell, or fish bladders. Boys and girls wore them in both ears.

5) Their necklaces and bracelets are made of BEADS. Each of these can be carved from wood, bone, or shell.

6) The tattoos are DESIGNS ON THEIR SKIN that never come off. Chiefs had more tattoos than anyone else. It showed their bravery.

7) The circle hanging from Chief Outina’s neck is a GORGET (gore-jet). It can be used as jewelry or worn as armor to protect him from enemy arrows. It can be made from shell or copper (the only metal the Timucuas had).

8) The circles hanging from Chief Outina’s waist are called JANGLES. They can be made of shell, wood, or copper. They jingle together when you walk.

9) Timucua Indians have very long black HAIR. They never cut it unless someone like their husband or their chief died. That was how they showed sadness.

10) The men’s shorts are called LOIN CLOTHS. They can be made from animal skin.
