Fieldtrip Programs

20 - 50 students may attend each fieldtrip unless otherwise noted. All programs include a nature hike & picnic time. Fieldtrips are offered Oct - April on M-Th and run from 9:30-1:30. Programs that can be offered in a handicap-accessible format are noted with an asterisk (*). Please notify us prior to your visit of any special needs. History  (1st -4th)      *ARCHAEOLOGY & THE TIMUCUA INDIANS  Check out Timucua projectile points (arrowheads), hike along 2000-year-old native trash piles, and visit the edge of a burial mound.  Students practice archaeology by excavating modern artifacts.

               (1st - 4th)       *NATIVE KNOW-HOW & THE TIMUCUA INDIANS  Feel furs, bones, and plants the Timucua used as tools; learn basic animal tracking; and hike along ancient native trash piles. Students practice native skills.

(5th- 12th)    FIELD ARCHAEOLOGY 30 student max  Students will be getting dirty while they use archaeological tools like trowels and sifting boxes to find and identify prehistoric and modern artifacts.  Students exercise deductive skills by reconstructing the past from archaeological clues.

Nature (1st  - 3rd)        *ANIMAL ADAPTATIONS Find out how animals are adapted to survive by playing Wildlife Jeopardy. Then hike a nature trail looking for signs of mammals, birds, and reptiles! After lunch, go on an Animal Signs Scavenger Hunt!

               (3rd - 5th)      BIRDS, BUGS, & BINOCULARS!  30 student max  [Best in Mar, Apr, Oct, Nov] Explore the natural world seeking bizarre birds and incredible insects.  Learn to use magnifying glasses, microslide viewers, and binoculars!              

               (4th- 6th)     * HABITAT HUNTERS  [Best in Mar, Apr, Oct, Nov] Hike through four different habitats, looking for Florida plants and animals.  Play Eco-Jeopardy to find out how plants are built to survive.  Then go on an Eco-Scavenger Hunt to discover what lives in a wild Florida habitat!

Science (4th- 6th)    *SOLAR SCIENCE Schools provide recipe ingredients. [Best in Apr, Oct, Nov]  Learn about the sun’s  energy from plants  to photovoltaic cells.  Students experiment with solar art, heat absorption, and cooking s’mores in a solar oven.

               (4th- 6th)     * SURVIVOR ISLAND Use a map and compass to find your way through the forest! Spend the morning learning compass and survival skills, then test your Wild Know-How on a ½ mile forested orienteering trail. Can YOU survive WILD Florida?
