EDUCATOR WORKSHOPS

Pelotes Island Nature Preserve offers workshops both at the Preserve and at area schools.  All of our workshops provide traditional and non-traditional educators with the opportunity to participate in activities and get hands-on experience with items like compasses, animal skulls, or Native American tools.  Participants will receive practical ready-to-use student activities that support the FCAT and the Sunshine State Standards.  [Participants can also earn 6-inservice points at our 6-hour workshops.]

Archaeology meets Indiana Jones and the Timucuan Indians:   Jan. 31, 2009

Hike over the remnants of early Jacksonville cultures from the Timucuan Indians thru a 1920's town site. Find out what a PB&J sandwich, garbage, acid rain and archaeology have in common. Learn through hands-on exploration of Native American artifacts and by participating in activities like pottery making, hide scraping and corn grinding.  Take home a plethora ideas and activities to use in your classroom.

Schedule a Mini-Workshop at Your School!

Make Early-Release days work for YOU!  Choose from 75-minute mini-workshops for early-release dates or schedule a 6-hour in-service workshop on professional development days.  A minimum of 15 participants are required to schedule a workshop at your school. 

75 minute Mini-Workshops on Duval Early-Release Dates: 

Animal Adaptations:   What are adaptations?  Find out while exploring a variety of adaptation activities in a “station” format.  FCAT prompts available for each activity!
Bizarre Bugs:   What are the 6 main kinds of bugs?  Check out these preserved critters, then compete in a ready-to-go scavenger hunt for bugs and bug signs in your schoolyard.
Timucua Indians:    Learn the basics about this early Jacksonville culture through hands-on exploration of recreated native artifacts.  Then try native skills like rope-weaving that you can use in your classroom.
Science on a Shoestring:  Try a variety of quick, easy, inexpensive science experiments that you can run in your classroom using reused or recycled materials.
