Volunteer Project
Native Hut Construction

After weathering 2 years of tropical storms and hurricanes, the native hut located at the Preserve’s Hickory Hill Nature Pavilion needed to be replaced.

Jason Weigleitner volunteered to head up the project of building a new hut to complete his Eagle Scout Award.  The Preserve staff designed the new hut and Jason coordinated the labor and the donation of materials.  Hopefully, this hut will last for 10 years!

Twenty volunteers provided over 175 hours of labor to complete the 17’ x 15’ hut.  Approximately 40 pine trees of various sizes and over 800 palm fronds were needed to build the structure.   Over 1700 nails were used to erect the structure and secure the palm fronds.  Despite the constant presence of mosquitoes, deer flies, and spiders, the volunteers worked tirelessly to finish the job during Summer 2000.

Special THANKS to Jason Weigleitner, War-Mar Timber Inc. for donating and delivering the pine trees, Gracy & Associates for donating and delivering the palm fronds,  SJRPP maintenance for structural support, and all of the volunteers and their families!
